Burr and Hamilton had a fractious relationship that began in 1791, when Burr challenged Hamilton's father-in-law, Gen. Philip John Schuyler, for a seat in the United States Senate.

Burr enraged Hamilton, who thereafter sought to stymie his political ambitions on multiple occasions.
