Ancient Roman literature was written in the Latin language, and its origins can be traced back to around the 3rd Century B.C. Early Roman literary works involved historical epics retelling Rome’s early military history, while the later works were poetry, comedies, histories, and tragedies. Much of Roman literature was influenced and inspired by Greek literature. Some of the most famous Roman poets were Virgil, Horace, and Ovid.
