In the debate over the thirteenth amendment, democrats in congress sought to end the institution of slavery for good. Tried to stop racism. The U.S. Senate enacted an anti-slavery amendment in 1864.

All the Republicans in the Senate participated in the discussion in favor; however, the Democrats voted against it, instead advocating for the return of federalism and states' rights.

Only four Democrats deviated from their party's principles to vote in favor of the correction. Lincoln's position regarding the thirteenth amendment continued to improve in late spring.
