The next day he was assassinated. On the day of the speech King was exhausted, had a sore throat and was feeling ill. Nevertheless, he spoke for more than 40 minutes, delivering one of his most imported speeches. The speech referred to the Memphis sanitation strike but King also called for unity, strength and unification of the nation. He said: ' <em>We</em> <em>have an opportunity to make America a better nation...'.</em>
