One common overregularization error children make is they apply a suffix to a word instead modifying the root of the word (e.g. "tooths" instead of "teeth" or "fighted" instead of "fought").

In linguistics, a suffix is an affix that is placed when the stem of a word. Common examples are case endings, that indicate the grammatical category of nouns, adjectives, and verb endings, that kind the conjugation of verbs. Suffixes will carry grammatical data or lexical data.

A suffix is a letter or cluster of letters, for instance '-ly' or '- ness', that is further to the top of a word so as to create a special word, typically of a special form class. For instance, the suffix '-ly' is further to ' quick' to create 'quickly'.
