How do synonyms best help readers to figure out the meaning of unknown words?

When they read the word and a synonym for it if they will know that they both are the same just in case they are writing a paper

Synonyms are words that mean the same thing as another word(GOOD,GREAT,FINE,HEALTHY,ROBUST) all mean the same thing. so if you know the meaning of a synonym for the word you cant figure out the meaning of then the synonym will give you the meaning of the word your looking for. for instance if you don't know what BAD means but you know what POOR means then you know that bad means the same thing because its a synonym.
