José Arcadio Segundo is the sole surviving witness to the the massacre of the workers.

In One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garca Márquez depicts the economic and political takeover of Macondo by the banana company, the strike by field workers, and the military repression and massacre, all of which are closely based on occasions that occurred in rural Colombia between 1900 and 1928.

The United Fruit Company of Boston expanded from small holdings in Colombia to a veritable state-within-a-state in an area spanning from coastal Santa Marta to Aracataca (the author's hometown). Similar to Macondo, the company had its own irrigation system, water policy, and distinct American-style residential compounds. There were also company stores for food.
