What is paraphilia?
The term "paraphilia" refers to any intense and pervasive sexual attraction that is not genital arousal or preliminary fondling with phenotypically healthy, physically capable, and willing human partners.
A paraphilia is deemed a paraphilic disorder if it results in the person's suffering or impairment or if their satisfaction puts them at danger of harming themselves or others.
Thus, having a paraphilic disorder requires the presence of a paraphilia, but it is not sufficient in itself.
If a paraphilia does not cause discomfort, disability, or current or prospective injury, therapeutic intervention is not always necessary.
Each of the several varieties of paraphilic illnesses places a distinct emphasis on the sufferer's sexual desire.
Paraphilias are predisposed to by biological, psychological, and social reasons.
The DSM-5, the most recent standard reference for mental health diagnoses, describes how while the desired sexual stimulant for the paraphilia sufferer vary on the individual paraphilia, the aspects of the disorder are frequently extremely similar.
Mental health experts often perform or send the patient for a medical interview, physical examination, and standard laboratory testing in order to establish the diagnosis of paraphilia.
The expert will examine any past histories of mental health issues.
