The theme in the story is that some misfortunes are blessings in disguise, and the narrator develops it by recounting the events that led to a fulfilled life.

What is theme?

In literature, we call theme that important message that underlies a text. The theme is, in other words, the idea or lesson the author wishes to teach us through his or her writing.

After reading the story "A Complication or Two," we could identify a theme concerning misfortunes and how they may turn out to be blessings in disguise. The author unfolds that theme through the events in the story. The narrator met his wife because of a misfortune - the rejection letter from his dream university. In the end, all of his plans changed, but he found happiness nonetheless.

As the narrator says:

 • "But there’s no doubt that some misfortunes turn into pivotal moments that can alter the course of a person’s life for the better."

After Gregor Samsa turns into an insect in Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, His concern for his family members remains intact. W
Misha Larkins [42]

Answer:

 • Kafka shows how, despite his current condition, Gregor still worries and cares for his family.

Explanation:

Despite the fact that he feels distourbed and hungry, Gregor moves himself in resisting the urge to panic and appearing so as not to inconvenience his family anything else than he as of now has.

Excerpt:

The chief clerk had to be held back, calmed down, convinced and finally won over; the future of Gregor and his family depended on it! If only his sister were here! She was clever; she was already in tears while Gregor was still lying peacefully on his back. And the chief clerk was a lover of women, surely she could persuade him; she would close the front door in the entrance hall and talk him out of his shocked state. But his sister was not there, Gregor would have to do the job himself.

…

“I was quite alright last night, my parents know about it, perhaps better than me, I had a small symptom of it last night already. They must have noticed it. I don't know why I didn't let you know at work! But you always think you can get over an illness without staying at home.”

…

He spent the whole night there. Some of the time he passed in a light sleep, although he frequently woke from it in alarm because of his hunger, and some of the time was spent in worries and vague hopes which, however, always led to the same conclusion: for the time being he must remain calm, he must show patience and the greatest consideration so that his family could bear the unpleasantness that he, in his present condition, was forced to impose on them.

…

Whatever was said next would be crucial, so, in order to make his voice as clear as possible, he coughed a little, but taking care to do this not too loudly as even this might well sound different from the way that a human coughs and he was no longer sure he could judge this for himself. Meanwhile, it had become very quiet in the next room. Perhaps his parents were sat at the table whispering with the chief clerk, or perhaps they were all pressed against the door and listening.
