Fruit fly embryo first begins to develop, a large cell is generated that contains over 8000 genetically identical nuclei by M phase.

The cell divides into two new cells during the mitotic (M) phase using its replicated DNA and cytoplasm. Mitosis and cytokinesis are two separate division-related mechanisms that occur during the M phase. Without cytokinesis, mitosis produces a cell with multiple nuclei but a linked cytoplasm (syncytium). A cell with several nuclei is said to be multinucleated. This may be a frequent occurrence. For instance, multinucleated bone cells (osteoclasts) develop in this way in humans.

The cell cycle is repeated several times in the embryo, however cytokinesis does not take place in the M phase.
