Yeast cells of mating type 'a' are genetically engineered to produce only mating factor '?' instead of the normal mating factor 'a'.

The gene for the mating factor receptor was unaltered. These engineered cells will behave in terms of mating in the following manner:-

(C) They will mate with each other or with normal mating type 'a' cells, but not with normal mating type '?' cells.

Yeast cells exist either in the haploid forms, i.e. MAT 'a' as well as MAT 'α', or as MAT 'a'/'α' diploid forms. Both the haploid as well as diploid cells are capable of replication by vegetative means.

Mating of two haploid cells with opposite mating types produces diploid cells, whereas, haploid cells are created by the method of spore formation during meiosis.
