The subduction zone dips to the west which makes shallow earthquakes occur to the east and deeper earthquakes occur to the west.

A geological process called subduction occurs at convergent boundaries and recycles the oceanic lithosphere into the Earth's mantle. Where two tectonic plates meet, the heavier plate sinks beneath the second plate and into the mantle because of the convergence of their oceanic lithospheres. A "subduction zone" is the location where this process takes place.

A subduction zone is a plate tectonic boundary where two plates converge and one plate is driven beneath the other. Geohazards like volcanoes and earthquakes are the result of this process.
