Based on the excerpt and the situation described by the writer, the author’s main purpose in this excerpt is to <u>describe a form of code writing using an example.</u>

<h3>What is the Form of Code Writing?</h3>

In the military and some security establishments, there is various form of code writing which allows messages or information to be passed without the non-initiated knowing the context of the message.

In this expert, the author narrates the short story to explain how a form of code writing is being utilized as an example of General Clinton writing a secret message in a letter to General Burgoyne, which bypassed the non-initiated without understanding the context of the message, yet, when it got delivered to General Burgoyne, it is fully understood by the receiver.

This is evident when the author said the unmasked letter had enough false information in it to fool any American who happened to see it, however, when General Burgoyne viewed the letter with the mask, he read Clinton's view of the real situation.
