The distortion caused by the Mercator projection is its main drawback. It does not accurately depict the sizes or forms of the continents of the planet.
Gerardus Mercator invented the Mercator projection, a style of map projection, in 1569. The parallels of latitude are parallel horizontal straight lines that are spaced further and farther apart as their distance from the equator rises, whereas the meridians are evenly spaced parallel vertical lines.
