The Central Labor Union promotes the labor day in the United States.

Central Labor Union of New York, Brooklyn, and New Jersey was an early trade union organization that later splintered into several locals that are now AFL-CIO members. The CLU was founded nearly two decades before the consolidation of New York City (1897), and it is best known as the organization that created the American Labor Day holiday. It was founded in 1867 and later spread to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The union was founded on Marxist principles and was the first integrated labor union in the United States.

The first Labor Day holiday was observed on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, according to the Central Labor Union's plans. On September 5, 1883, the Central Labor Union observed its second Labor Day holiday.
