"=SUMA1:A5" is the formula for combining the values of cells A1 to A5.
Even though it is a relatively straightforward statement, I truly am unsure of what Excel is doing when I enter the following in a cell:
=A1:A5, which is the range of a set of cells by definition.
Unless I press Ctrl+Shift+Enter after entering the formula outside of the first five rows on the whole spreadsheet, Excel in this situation returns #VALUE!.
If, for example, I use the formula =A1:A5 in cell B2 and the values contained in the aforementioned range (A1:A5) are 1, 2, 3, and 5, Excel will respond with the value 2. For instance, if I enter the formula =A1:A5 in cell K3, Excel will return the value 3, etc.
However, Excel returns a value of 1 if I type the formula =A1:A5 in B6 and hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter. Excel returns the value 1 again if I enter the formula =A1:A5 in cell K346 and then hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter. From this point on, Excel always returns the value 1, excepting the first 5 rows of the entire spreadsheet, of course.
