Raphael "stood confused in wonder and admiration: the method of Leonardo suited him more than any other," according to Vasari, a sixteenth-century artist and historian.

Leonardo, who had been making significant advances in painting from 1480, left his stamp in 1507 and is clearly visible. Leonardo's paintings of the Madonna and Child with St. Anne, which exhibit a closeness and simplicity of setting unheard of in 15th-century art, had a significant effect on Raphael. There are some parallels between Raphael and Da Vinci. In their younger years, the two individuals both exhibited artistic skill. Additionally, they stand for the pinnacle of High Renaissance artistic achievement. They produced a great deal of art and left behind precious works of art for future generations.

While the biblical figures in both paintings are depicted in a similar way, Raphael's rendition has a brighter, lighter tone and a clearer disposition in contrast to Da Vinci's more gloomy, murky, and darker work.
