In a research she undertook in 1991, Geronimus compared the long-term outcomes for young moms to those of their sisters who did not become pregnant while still adolescents. A nonequivalent group design is used in this study.

However, the resulting groups are likely to differ in some respects when individuals are not randomly assigned to conditions. Researchers view them as non-equivalent because of this. It simply means that the group assignments were not made at random. In other words, the researcher did not have any influence over the process of assigning people to groups at random.

In the research which was conducted in 1991, Geronimus contrasted the long-term outcomes of teen moms with those of their non-pregnant sisters. This study is a good illustration of a nonequivalent group design.
