The clonal selection theory proposes that antigen selects lymphocytes for activation from a population of cells precommitted to produce specific antibody.

Clonal selection involves two main concepts are cloning and affinity maturation. More precisely, it establishes the idea that only those cells capable of recognizing an antigen will proliferate, while other cells are selected against. Clone selection induces both B and T cells. The branched chain theory is a theory proposed by Paul Ehrlich (1854-1915) to explain the immune response of living cells. Early in his career, Ehrlich theorized that chemical structures could be used to explain why an immune response occurs in response to infection. Clone selection involves two main concepts: replication and affinity maturation. More precisely, he established the idea that only cells capable of recognizing an antigen proliferate and other cells are selected against it. Clone selection induces both B and T cells.
