He played a significant role in the colony's early history, wielding considerable civil and military authority and enforcing a ban on both alcohol and slavery.
Oglethorpe led British troops in Georgia in their conflict with Spanish forces stationed in Florida during the War of Jenkins' Ear. He oversaw a protracted, fruitless Siege of St. Augustine in 1740. In 1742, he subsequently repulsed a Spanish invasion of Georgia.
