In this excerpt of "The Crisis", Thomas Paine initially offers his audience a cruel description of one having his home and family taken from him, and being made captive by others. Paine then proceeds to show his own fairness and sense of justice (ethos - appeal to ethics) when he claims that the perpetrators of such horrible actions should be equally punished. it does not matter if it was a common person or a king who hurt a fellow human being so. Justice will only be accomplished when the punishment truly fits the crime, despite the person who committed it being a government authority.
