The Philippines is rich in various natural resources. Countries who took over the Philippines wanted to exploit these resources to themselves. The US had a war against Spain and after having said won, they deemed that the Philippines isn't ready yet for its own republic or government. They also wanted to spread Christianity to the Philippines. However, the underlying reason is they want to befriend Philippines to gain things they want, and of course, show to other countries they are powerful.
