Hedda compares Lovborg to any common man. She does not refer to him as a hard competitor from the academic world.

Explanation:

"....any one should throw you into the shade..." Hedda is not a well-meant character. She is ambitious and she does not want to be married to a an unsuccessful man. The word " any one" means any person from the common. " ..to throw into the shade" means to insult him by stopping Tesman from getting a better position in the academic world.
