One was the letter written by Dupuy de Lome, a high Spanish official in the United States, who insulted President McKinley in a letter to a friend in Cuba. The other event that fueled jingoism was the sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana port, two hundred and sixty American sailors died.
