The Dewey decimal system is also known as Dewey decimal classification is a method commonly used to classify books and publication in libraries. Dewey decimal system makes use of digits that ranges from 000 to 999.

The digits are used to highlights knowledge of different fields.

However, the different field of knowledge depends on different subdivisions. The subdivisions are characterized by decimals and numbers.

In 1837, Melvil Dewey, an American Liberian invented the Dewey classification. The Dewey classification system was coined from the name of the inventor. The first college library to initiate the Dewey classification system was Amherst college library and it was published for the first time in 1876. However, better versions of Dewey decimal system were developed overtime and the 23rd edition was released in 2011.  

Different numbers represent special topics under Dewey decimal system. The number used to represent geography will be totally different to that of biology.

In Decimal classification system, all knowledge is classifying into 10 groups, with each of the 10 groups having further classification, and assigned hundred numbers.
