  • <em>The US economy expanded </em><em>at its quickest rate in history between the 1870s and the 1980s</em>.
  • <em>Urbanization, widespread immigration, and technological advancements</em> occurred during this time.
  • Laissez-faire capitalism prevailed during this time, benefiting large corporations but not the working class.
  • The public referred to industrialist leaders and financiers as "robber barons" and they were able to amass enormous wealth.
  • Strikes resulted from unrest, although the federal government tended to support business owners over unions.
  • In addition, there was a <em>significant political turnout during this time</em>. This was greater than 90% in some states. Governments, though, were dishonest. Every president from 1876 through 1992 received less than 50% of the vote, which limited what they could achieve.<em> </em>
  • <em>The majority of their time was spent seeking political favors</em> from individuals who had aided in their election to power through patronage. The reason they are frequently referred to as the "forgotten presidents" is due to this. The picture "The Bosses of the Senate" shows how much more authority robber barons have than public servants.
