1. Discuss why reproductive isolation is necessary for divergence in populations.

1. Reproductive isolation is essential for population divergence. The mechanisms of reproductive isolation are essential for speciation which is the process of development of new species from preexisting species.

Due to reproductive isolation individuals of the same population will acquire different types of genetic variations and mutations such that males and females of the isolated populations cannot reproduce with each other.

3. Mechanisms of reproductive isolation are temporal isolation, behavioural isolation, gametic isolation, ecological isolation, mechanical isolation, hybrid inviability, hybrid sterility and hybrid breakdown.

4. Species populations within the same habitat become reproductively isolated in sympatric speciation. This speciation is a resultant of polyploidy where an offspring develops with twice the number of chromosomes.

5. Allopatric speciation is also called geographic isolation and it is the most common type of isolation. A geographical barrier separates individuals of  a species and the separated groups develop into new species.

In rabbits, short hair (S) is dominant over long hair (s). What genotype and phenotype ratios are expected from a cross between
irga5000 [103]

Answer:

Answer:

Genotype                  Phenotype

SS                 1/4          Short hair         3/4

Ss                 2/4         Short hair          3/4

ss                  1/4          Long hair          1/4

Explanation:

Both are heterozygous for the trait so we can expect that the cross would be:

Ss x Ss

   S     s

S  SS   Ss

s   Ss   ss

So the resulting off-spring would have the following genotype and phenotype:

1 out of 4 will have a genotype of SS.

2 out of 4 or half will have a genotype of Ss.

1 out of 4 will have a genotype of ss.

But because short hair is dominant the phenotype ratios would differ because Ss and SS would express short hair, so we add up their ration:

Short hair: 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4

Long hair:  1/4

So in summary:

Genotype                  Phenotype

SS                 1/4          Short hair         3/4

Ss                 2/4         Short hair

ss                  1/4          Long hair          1/4

Which of the following is not characteristic of smooth muscle? A) The striations are due to the orderly arrangement of actin and
Tems11 [23]

Answer:

A) The striations are due to the orderly arrangement of actin and myosin

Explanation:

Smooth muscles are non-striated involuntary muscles which are found in the walls of stomach, urinary bladder, blood vessels...Smooth muscle tissue is composed of spindle-shaped muscle cells with single central nucleus. Like the other two type of muscles (cardiac and skeletal), smooth muscles also have four main functions:

  • Contractility-ability to contract. In the case of skeletal muscles it is voluntary, while in cardiac and smooth muscles it is unconscious.
  • Excitability-ability to change  membrane potential usually by the influence of nervous impulse.
  • Extensibility-the capacity to lengthen
  • Elasticity-ability to change its length and then return to previous.

Describe two ways the biosphere interacts with the atmosphere.
Mashcka [7]

Answer:

In more subtle ways, atmosphere-biosphere interactions influence the health of the air we breathe (see figure): rough surfaces of vegetation remove aerosols, ozone, and other reactive gases from the air through dry deposition; plants emit a huge variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are precursors to ..
