In Chapter 30 of <em>Jane Eyre</em>, St. John finds a position for Jane in a town called Morton. The job involves running a charity school for girls. When Jane arrives at Morton, the wealthy heiress Rosamund Oliver provides Jane with a cottage in which to live. Morton is the most austere dwelling that Jane had yet experienced. Moreover, she finds the work degrading and disappointing.
