The election of Hiram Rhodes Revel was significant because he became the first African-American citizen to ever serve in the US Congress. He was first elected in 1870 to represent that state of Mississippi. This election showed that the Reconstruction policies of the Radical republicans were working, as they were providing African-Americans political opportunities.
