The answer is: D.To develop his tone

In “The Grapes of Wrath” John Steinbeck shows the difficult situation that the farmers in Oklahoma had during the great depression, how they gain huge debts with the banks for the economics problems of the time and uses the parallelism to highlight the contrast of opposing ideas developing the tone of this novel.

The students who had the flu had a(n) _____ reason for missing school. They normally have perfect attendance, and their absence
Molodets [167]
The answer is B. Because, if the students had the flu, of course their absence was 'legitimate', which means 'acceptable', allowed. And 'aberration' means 'something unusual or unexpected", because they usually have perfect attendance, but now they missed a couple of classes.
