A range of mountains along the pacific zone of volcanicity, the Andes, are as a result of tectonic plate processes caused by the subduction of the oceanic crust beneath the South American plate. Their rise is mainly attributed to the compression of the western rim of the South American plate, due to the subduction of the Nazca and Antarctic plates.
