The victory signaled the first time that republican won control of the houses in forty years. this was both senate and the house of representative,despite earlier indications they would loss the seats. It gave them hope of winning the presidential election that year, but it seems that this was not forthcoming as democratic candidate Bil Clinton triumphed over incumbent republican president George Bush.
