A You-language are phrases that usually begin with the pronoun 'you' and and imply that the listener is responsible for something. They indicate blame, guilt and accuse toward the receiver.

An I-statement forces the speaker to take responsibility for what he is thinking and feeling it also stops him from putting the blame on the receiver. The speaker can still be assertive but in a much more compassionate way.

1. I - language: I feel unappreciated when you don't take the trash out. I wish you'd help me so we both share our duties. Please, be more considerate.

2. I - language: Dad, I feel a bit funny and awkward when you tell jokes to my friends. I think I also feel a bit overwhelmed and ignored. Would you consider stopping it, please?

3. I - language: I get so worried every time you're late. I get anxious and imagine the worst. Can I ask you to be a bit more responsible in the future? Or at least inform me when you're late.

4. I - language: I'm afraid this outfit doesn't enhance your looks. Some people may find it funny and strange. I hope you know that I think you look lovely always, just try be more considerate with your way of dressing sometimes.
