Alexander Ypsilantis was a Greek nationalist politician who was a member of a Greek Phanariot Family. These families were located in Constantinople and usually occupied key positions throughout the Ottoman Empire.

Ypsilantis was the leader of the secret organization known as Filiki Eteria and architect of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, which started on October 8th, 1820.
