At first, these nations admired Western political parties but later hopes for economic growth failed and doors opened for military and autocratic regimes. For instance, Indonesia was granted independence in the fears that the Communist Party there would take over. The new ruler dissolved the constitution and attempted a 'guided democracy' but military officers overthrew the leader and established a military government.
