Geologists have known for about 100 years that the Earth is composed of four layers; the Crust, the Mantle, the Outer Core, and the Inner Core .
Scientists still argue about the makeup of these layers and exactly how each layer interact with the other layers. We are not even sure how the layers were formed but we have some theories.

Because we can not go to the center of the earth we have to find our answers otherwise.

This is what a geologist by the name of Andrija Mohorovicic did. He discovered in 1909 that earthquake waves near the surface moved slower than earthquake waves that passed through the interior of the Earth. He also noticed that the P (primary, first and strongest) waves that passed through the interior of the Earth did not do so in a straight line. These waves were bent or deflected by something!
What the scientist knew was that waves of all kinds move faster and straighter through denser, more solid objects.
So Mohorovicic came to the conclusion that the outside layer or Crust was made of less dense material (Rock) and the next layer, the Mantle was much denser. This would explain why the earthquake waves moved slower through the crust.
So by looking at the seismic waves from earthquakes the scientist learned about the crust and the mantle but they also learned about the outer and inner core.
To do this you have to look at a different kind of waves, the S (secondary waves) waves that also get released by an earthquake. These S waves are slower.
Beno Gutenberg , a German geologist, believed that the Outer Core must be made of a liquid because the slower S waves could not pass through this layer and in fact "bounced off" and were deflected many degrees off course.
The fourth layer, the Inner Core, is composed of very, very hot metals (iron and nickel) with pressures so great that the metals do not flow as a liquid, but are forced to vibrate in place like a solid.
Earthquake waves that reach this layer move at the greatest speeds because waves move through solids faster than through gases and liquids.
This is how we know that there have to be different layers. Otherwise the behavior of the different seismic waves would not make sense.

Which of the following would you expect to contain cells with the same number of chromsomes as an egg cell in a plant? (Pick all
marissa [1.9K]

Answer:

The correct answer is option - A. Gametophyte, C. spore, and D. sperm.

Explanation:

The egg cell of a plant is haploid in the cell which means it has only one set of chromosomes. The haploid cells arise from the meiosis cell division in parent sex cells. These parent cells are divided into four cells with half of the chromosome number in comparison to the parent cells.

The gametophyte, spore, and sperm all three are the product of the meiosis division and are haploid in number.

Thus, the correct answer is option - A, gametophyte, C. spore and D. sperm.

What distinguishes bogs, marshes, and swamps from each other?
vladimir2022 [97]
The answer is b. Swamps are deeper and have a larger proportion of surface water than marshes, and bogs have acidic groundwater.

Bogs, marshes, and swamps are types of wetlands. Swamps and marshes are mineral soil wetlands. Swamps are deeper and with a larger proportion of surface water than marshes. Usually, swamps develop from marshes that fill in. Bogs are organic soil wetlands. They are acid areas with acidic groundwater.

Explain the difference between fire resistance and flame spread. describe the hazards firefighters should be aware of during the
Kaylis [27]

Fire resistance is where the amount of time that material has withstood a standard fire exposure whereas flame spread is the speed at which a flame spread along the surface of a specific material and is considered as the difference between fire resistance and flame spread.

Fire resistance is the resistance to fire that is for a particular specified time and is under circumstances of standard heat intensity. It will not structurally fail or else allow the transition of heat and also not permit the side away from the fire so as to become hotter than a temperature that is specified well.

Flame spread is described as the surface burning characteristics enhanced by building materials. It is the most tested property of the fire performance of a material.

Firefighters should be aware of the growth and spread of a fire as they face respiratory hazards in emergency situations which include oxygen deficiency, temperature elevation, smoke as well as toxic atmospheres. This can also affect both the physical and mental effects of the firefighter and would be worse if proper respirator precautions are not followed.

This indicates that firefighters are regularly exposed to certain concentrations of hazardous materials that include carcinogenic products such as carbon monoxide, benzene, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen cyanide, aldehydes as well as particulates.
