The African National Congress (ANC) was founded in 1912 by John Langalibalele Dube. It goals were to unite all African people, defend their rights and freedoms. It also called for the abolition of the apartheid regime since 1948. When the racist regime was ended in the 1990s, Nelson Mandela, the ANC main leader and national black hero, became the South African president in 1994. So, 82 years passed between the ANC´s foundation and the first time it came to power.
