En chile el siglo xx se caracteriza por el surgimiento de nuevos movimientos sociales integrados por los nuevos habitantes de las ciudades, en su mayoría campesinos que habían decidido dejar su vida en el campo buscando mejores condiciones de vida y trabajo, muchos no encontraros mas que pobreza y miseria. Otros migraron a las salitreras del norte del país buscando trabajo.Estos grupos se organizaron en busca de mejores condiciones de trabajo y de vida.
