Both the liberals and conservatives had different views about the motivations of rioters and looters: The liberals made a lot of emphasis on the social causes of the rioting and looting. The liberals perception was that poverty, joblessness, and socio-economic needs motivated the rioters and looters to riot and loot.

On the other hand, the conservatives viewed the rioters as uncivilized people who had to be taken out of the way in order to restore law and order. The conservatives felt that the rioters and looters were opportunists who wanted to use the trial verdict to break the law.

Generally, the liberals and conservatives dissociated the uprising (rioting and looting) from the trial verdict, and believed that the rioters and looters acted from a need that could be satisfied by good collaboration between the government, and the businesses that prospered as a result of government policies.
