Mayan sculptors preferred to work with limestone. However, they also worked with trachyte, sandstone, wood, and clay. Royalty were first class, then came the priests in 2nd class, then the merchants and artists were 3rd class, finally came peasants, slaves, and farmers in the lowest level.
The Mayans employed the codex-style of painting. Using this method, a vessel was covered in white slip, painted in light brown washes, then outlined in dark brown or black. Painters were often members of the ruling elite.
