Mali was founded by Sundiata Keita. Under his rule, the Mali Empire became renowned for its wealth. Sundiata Keita's grandnephew, Mansa Musa (also known as Musa I), traveled to Mecca and, thus, introduced the Islamic culture to the Mali Empire.
