Explanation:

In the process of osmosis,  the movement of substance takes place across a semipermeable membrane due to difference in concentration across both the sides of membrane. This difference in concentration constitutes a concentration gradient and the substance starts to move from the region of high concentration to the region of low concentration. Thus, no energy is required for osmosis as this process is driven by concentration gradient.  

But in case of active transport the movement of substance is against the concentration gradient i.e from region of low concentration to region of high concentration. Thus, energy is required to facilitate the movement of substance particle across the layer.  This energy is provided by proteins.
