In the South of the United States, slavery became common during part of the 18th and 19th century as many Africans were taken from Africa to be enslaved. However, those owning slaves were mainly wealthy people owning huge plantations as they needed a cheap labor force to earn a profit. Due to this, only around 25% or 33% of the white population owned slaves in the South during the 19th century, and these were mainly wealthy families and/or owners of plantations, while poor or middle-class families that were the majority, owned small farms they work on by themselves. Thus, it is false a large majority of the white population of the South owned slaves.
