After this, the French and the Spanish both recognized the colonies as independent from Britain.  And Valley Forge (winter 1777-78) Washington's army spent a harsh winter here in 1777-1778; 25% of troops who served during this time died from disease and malnutrition; they lacked food, proper clothing, and shelter. The German officer Von Steuben came here to train the American troops.
