There were a few moral and political arguments made by those who opposed the spread of slavery.

With the Mexican war, the ones who opposed slavery were upset about the compromise done (in terms of acquisitions of the Mexican war) as it would create an imbalance between the free and the slave states. They were angry as slavery could start in New Mexico and Southern California as a result of this war.

The Kansas-Nebraska act cancelled the Missouri Compromise and asked the states to decide themselves if they wanted to be a free state or a slave state. Conflicts rose between those supported and those who were against slavery and it led to a period of violence called "Bleeding Kansas". Stephen Douglas wanted to build railroad in the territory of Nebraska. All this led moral and political arguments.
