As Impressionism originated earlier in the late 1800s and Expressionism in the early 1900s, it's not surprising that they have a few similarities. Impressionism was more spontaneous while Expressionism was more abstract, but they both used oil paint as medium and put more thought and emotion into their brushstrokes than the current movements were allowing. Neither of their majorities painted to be wealthy, and they set a path for more flexibility in future art movements.
