Privileges: The French nobility had specific legal and financial rights and prerogatives. The first official list of these prerogatives was established relatively late, under Louis XI after 1440, and included the right to hunt, the right to wear a sword and have a coat of arms, and, in principle, the right to possess a fief or seigneurie. Nobles were also granted an exemption from paying the taille, except for non-noble lands they might possess in some regions of France. Furthermore, certain ecclesiastic, civic, and military positions were reserved for nobles. These feudal privileges are often termed droits de féodalité dominante.<span>With the exception of a few isolated cases, serfdom had ceased to exist in France by the 15th century. In early modern France, nobles nevertheless maintained a great number of seigneurial privileges over the free peasants that worked lands under their control. The correct answer is A) they put more power in the hands of the king.

What French aristocrats did in an effort to keep their privileges was "they put more power in the hands of the king."

The nobles in France were the wealthy and powerful class in French society. They benefitted so much of the relationship they had with the monarchy. For instance, they did not pay taxes. People from the third state, the peasants and poor ones were the ones that paid taxes. These kinds of injustices were the ones that accelerated the French Revolution.

The other options of the question were B) they declared war on the king. C) they left the Catholic Church. D) they organized an elected Parliament.

ruslelena [56]

The best answer is Mrs. Crater claims that she would not give her daughter away for anything, when in fact she gives her away for nothing at all.

Explanation

If you talk about the irony of a situation, you mean that it is odd or amusing because it involves a contrast. So when Mr. Crater says <em>"I wouldn’t give her up for nothing on earth"</em>, she doesn't mean it because she even pays Mr. Shiftlet to marry her daughter.

The other answers does not demonstrate the true irony of the excerpt:

  1. Mrs. Crater asserts that Lucynell can sweep, cook, feed the chickens, and h o. but the girl also is very smart: This can be considered ironic but it is not the irony of the whole excerpt.
  2. Mrs. Crater is describing all of her daughter’s strengths to Mr. Shiftlet in the hopes that he will marry Lucynell: This is not an irony.
  3. Crater says she values her daughter more than anything in the world, but then she gives her away for a car: This is not true.
