    Britain's own reluctance to launch a general offensive against him even after the formal declarations of war frustrated Hitler because Britain sent him no sign of truce or agreement. If it did not bring him total war, it offered no alternative, which led him to decide to order a general offensive against the Anglo-French forces on May 10, 1940, defeating France and forcing the British Expeditionary Force to hit a humiliating retreat through the Belgian port of Dunkirk, at which time Hitler was condescending to the evacuation of 385,000 British effected by the English Channel between May 26 and June 3, 1940.

    Winston Churchill, regardless of the ideological sympathies that part of the British elite devoted to the Nazis, would not accept any dealings with the German leader (a situation that was repeated again after the victory in World War II, when Stalin took over and controlled half from continental Europe and like Hitler became Britain's prime enemy).
