It can sometimes be physical as well because in the story the animal is a shapeshifter or toxic chemicals made him look human or a rock has the ability to speak or when someone saw the rock it made it into a statue that has legs and now the rock can run. But yeah if emotionally, mentally an psychologically the object or animal thinks, acts and reasons like a human it’s personification.
