The casta system was the division among people that divided them into different parts of society depending on their ancestry, birth, colour and race. It was created by the Spanish elites to rank people socially depending on their race in Hispanic America. The casta system is not to be confused with the Hindu caste system, a system which is still in use today.

One morning when we woke up

they attacked us

And we fought for life and limb

Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bella ciao ciao ciao

And we fought for life and limb

but death was on the neck

but death was on the neck

If I die now, oh my brothers

Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bella ciao ciao ciao,

When I die oh my brothers

then take me back home

When I die oh my brothers

then take me back home

There in the mountains on green heather

Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bell's ciao ciao ciao

in the mountains on green heather

under flowers be my grave,

in the mountains on green heather

under flowers be my grave

And these flowers all say so

Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bella ciao ciao ciao

Are a hero's flower

who gave his life for us

Are a hero's flower

who gave his life for us

Are the flower of our freedom

Are the flower of our freedom

and don't forget who we were

Are the flower of our freedom

And don't forget who we were
